STUDENTS OF UPM ON THE WAY TO SAVE THE PLANET WITH CRAFT & CREATIONS

By: Nishat Rumali Shammy

Students of QKK2101-3 (Community Service) students at UPM hosted 3 days event in an attempt to save the earth through advocating Zero Waste Concept and help the youth with their assignments during this pandemic by equipping them with basic video editing skills.

On the first day of the event, opening ceremony was held to inaugurate the program, followed by DIY: ZERO WASTE workshop. Opening ceremony started with registration of participants. After that honorary guest arrive to share some goodwill with the participants and be a part of this wonderful program. Shortly after that there was doa recitation followed by appreciation speeches and lastly a gimmick video presentation to show participants what is about to happen and to pump them up. Opening ceremony was perfect to start the program on an exciting note.

After the opening ceremony ended, DIY: ZERO WASTE workshop started. This session was full of games and activities like Ice-breaking session, Kahoot session, Group distribution and what not. As this event was almost 5 hours long, such fun activities were what kept the participants awake and motivated. Also, in this session, they got to learn so many things about how to contribute towards the planet. Sharing session by 3 AIESEC volunteers was the icing on the cake. They shared their own learning and struggle in following Zero Waste lifestyle with the participant which will surely be helping our earth from waste pollution.

On the very next day, June 20, Video Editing Workshop was held. Objective of this workshop was to help students with never ending video presentation assignments, so that they can finish editing in less time. At the same time, youth would be able to make a living by doing video editing works. So, this workshop was like killing two birds with one stone.  Video editing workshop team started showing off their skills by explaining and demonstrating many things like how to change background in a video, how to add subtitles, color grading ideas and many more things. This workshop was very informative and very close to being a professional workshop as it surely did not look like it was held by a bunch of undergraduate students. This workshop was much needed during this pandemic as all students must edit video presentations on a regular basis. Thus, it helped participants to learn so many new things and will also help them in their near future.

On June 26, judging session and closing ceremony was held to select and announce winners from both DIY and Video editing competition where participant was asked to show off their skills and learning by making a craft using recycled materials and edit a short video, respectively. Professional and experienced judges were called to help select the best winners from a talented bunch of people. After those 3 winners was selected from each workshop, along with 20 consolation prizes which totaled RM1400. Closing ceremony was ended with sharing session by organizing committee and capturing the moment in photo session. Best part of the closing session was the “Summary of the Program” where representatives from each team showed some appreciation and a little sharing on this journey. We got to know the struggles everyone faced and how it was overcome. Also, through a montage video presentation we got a glimpse of the overall journey throughout the program.

In a nutshell, this program was nothing short of being perfection. This program was a revolutionary approach to advocate for environment protection and to equip youth with basic video editing skills which is quite demanding on the market as well. Organizing committee of this program hopes that this will create at least a little change as the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
