MODERN CROPS: HYDROPONIC WITH B40 AND OKU

First year students from Volunteer Development Course (QKU2203II) - Group 8, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organized a Volunteer Community Project specializing in Hydroponic cultivation methods on 19 and 20 June 2021. This program is under the guidance of group 8 facilitator, Dr Velu A/L Perumal.

The theme for this program is the Hydroponics Workshop: "Skills To Property". The theme was chosen based on the goal of the program which is about knowledge transfer, which is exposure to modern cultivation techniques and skills. A total of 30 participants were involved, consisting of B40 and People with Disabilities (OKU).

The idea was sparked following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the entire country resulting in many communities being affected. We take this initiative as an opportunity to help the community to generate new income and live their daily lives.

People with Disabilities (OKU) are one of the important groups in society that have their own capability. Apart from providing facilities or services to them, the organization of this program is also an initiative of the students together with the Persatuan Pemulihan Orang -Orang Cacat Selangor & Wilayah Persekutuan - Rumah Insaniah Dr. Siti Hasmah, (PPOC) to provide exposure about the hydroponic crops as well as improve the skills in order to ensure their importance and well-being.

Ybhg Puan Suhaila Emma Merican, in her speech, said Hydroponics Workshop: "Skills to Property" is a program that can give a positive impact to the community especially people with disabilities who strive to develop and achieve their maximum potential, so that people with disabilities earn their income and improve the quality of life.

“Our association provides a basic responsibility, not just to provide shelter and food, even instilling the value of life to every resident. So, this Hydroponics Workshop Program gives a positive impact from the project as well as providing opportunities to learn and obtain the benefits from the project”.

She also added, "this workshop activity also can pique the interest of our residents through each activity planned in accordance with their limited physical abilities. Therefore, we appreciate for involving us in this program.”

It is hoped that this Hydroponics Workshop: "Skills To Property" can spark interest in agriculture as a hobby and build a community that loves the environment.
