“SPREADING SMILES: FROM STUDENTS TO ELDERLY”

Kajang:- Around 30 students from Universiti Putra Malaysia with the involvement of the nearby community have succeeded the Spreading Smiles program which was held at Pusat Jagaan Siti Nor Aini. These are including the participation of international students from Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Spreading Smiles is conducted to instill a sense of empathy towards the community especially the elderly and to increase the soft skills among students mainly in leadership, communication, and teamwork. Besides, it also promoted a healthy lifestyle and prosperity in the neighborhood regardless of their background.

Moreover, it is seen as social responsibilities toward the elderly as their generation is more prone to loneliness and social isolation. A little time we spend with them may mean a world for them.

According to the director of this program, Muhammad Anas bin Suhaimi, he believed that this program can teach students how to manage and taking care of the elderly as all of us would probably experience it in later life.

“ Charity program like this is will give a great life opportunity to me and my fellow friends to experience and learn the sweetness of living in a care center.”

“ It is hoped that this program will raise awareness among the community and students about the importance of caring and taking care of the elderly. Good values such as fostering compassion and courtesy need to be applied to the university students in order for us to have great personalities.” - He added.

There were various interesting activities such as mural drawing, urban farming and cooking with the community. It is hoped that the objectives of the program are achieved and more charity programs like this will be held in the future.
